How to use

Vivāha Muhurta Finder

Choose KP or classical Vedic rules, then enter the bride's and groom's birth details and the wedding venue. The finder checks every minute of your date range and lists the Lagna windows that pass. Each window comes with the reasons it passed.

Birth details are optional, but without them the finder skips the checks for that person (Dasa, Tara and Chandra bala, and the 8th/12th-from-natal test). Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Rules the finder applies (editable)
A planet signifies the cusps where it is star-lord or sub-lord. A cusp sub-lord signifies through its own star-lord and sub-lord. The Vedic method always rejects Rikta tithis, Ashtami, Amavasya, Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yoga, and Vishti karana. It counts houses whole-sign from the rising sign.

How a window is judged

  1. Panchāṅga (must pass). The Moon must be in a marriage nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati. The tithi must not be Rikta (4, 9, 14), Ashtami or Amavasya. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yoga and Vishti (Bhadra) karana are rejected. Venus and Jupiter must not be combust. With the month rule on, the Sun must not be in Cancer, Leo or Virgo (Chaturmāsa) or in Sagittarius or Pisces (Kharmās).
  2. Lagna shuddhi (must pass). The 7th and 8th signs from the rising sign must be empty (Jāmitra), and the Moon must not be 6th, 8th or 12th from it. The rising sign must not be 8th or 12th from either person's natal Lagna or Moon sign.
  3. Score. Points are added for: a preferred tithi, a good weekday (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday), and Tara and Chandra bala for both people. More points come from Jupiter, Venus and Mercury in kendra or trikona, malefics in 3, 6 or 11 and none in a kendra or trikona, a fixed or dual Lagna, the Lagna lord outside 6, 8 and 12, and a waxing Moon.

A window lasts as long as the same rising sign, tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana hold, usually up to about two hours. Houses are counted whole-sign from the rising sign. Chaturmāsa and Kharmās are approximated by the Sun's sign, and eclipses and Adhika māsa are not checked, so confirm the date with a panchāṅga.

  1. KP test (must pass). In the chart for that minute at the venue, the 7th cusp sub-lord must signify 2, 7 or 11, and none of 1, 6, 10 or 12. It also must not show 4 or 10 together with 7, which means separation. The Lagna sub-lord must signify 1 or 11 and not 8 or 12. The 7th sub-lord and its star-lord must not be retrograde.
  2. Day test (must pass). No Rikta tithi or Amavasya, and Venus and Jupiter must not be combust. The rising sign must not be 8th or 12th from either person's natal Lagna or Moon sign.
  3. Score. Points are added for: a classical marriage nakshatra, Tara and Chandra bala for both people, empty 7th and 8th houses, Jupiter and Venus in kendra or trikona, malefics in 3, 6 or 11, and a fixed or dual Lagna. More points come from the Moon's star and sub-lords, the ruling planets agreeing with each person's natal 2-7-11 significators, and each person's running Dasa, Bukti and Antara.

The Lagna moves into a new sub every few minutes, so a window is usually only minutes long. Hold the main rite, such as Mangalya-dhāraṇa, inside it. Eclipses and Adhika māsa are not checked, so confirm those with a panchāṅga.

How to use the Muhurta Finder

  1. Choose a method. KP tests the 7th and Lagna cusp sub-lords and gives windows that are only minutes long. Vedic uses the classical panchāṅga (tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana) and Lagna shuddhi, and gives windows of up to about two hours.
  2. Enter the bride's and groom's birth details. Type the birth city and pick it from the list. Latitude, longitude and UTC offset fill in by themselves. If a city is not listed, type those three numbers yourself. Use the exact birth time, with seconds if you know them.
  3. Enter the wedding venue and dates. Pick the venue city, the From and To dates, and the earliest and latest time of day you would hold the ceremony. A shorter date range gives results faster.
  4. Check the rules (optional). Open Rules the finder applies to see or change the conditions. Restore defaults puts them back.
  5. Press Find muhurtas. The bar shows progress while every minute of the range is checked.
  6. Read the results. Each window shows its time and a score. Open Why this window to see every check it passed or failed, and Rasi & Navamsa charts to see the chart for that moment. Use the menus above the results to sort, filter by score, or switch between South and North Indian charts. Print gives a clean copy.

Tips. Birth details are optional, but without them the checks that depend on each person (Dasa, Tara and Chandra bala, the 8th/12th-from-natal test) are skipped. Your details stay in this browser and are remembered for next time. They are never sent anywhere. Use ◐ Theme to change light/dark mode and colours.

Eclipses and Adhika māsa are not checked. Take your chosen window to your astrologer and a panchāṅga before fixing the date.
